Adam Proteau’s War On Women…

continues.  I’m beginning to have second thoughts about subscribing, and buying gift subscriptions, to the Hockey News, because of Hockey News writer’s Adam Proteau’s seemingly pathological war on women and culture.

In his latest article, Hey NHL – let’s treat women as equals and ice the ice girls, Proteau attacks the NHL, again, for their Ice Girls. ( I thought I admonished him sufficiently here, http://flashinleather.mlblogs.com/2015/10/09/tool-of-the-day/)

Friends, readers, sentient beings, is there anything to complain about in regard to this masterpiece?

I’m not trying to be funny either.  There is nothing wrong with beautiful women and there is nothing wrong with fans appreciating beautiful women. It is the same appreciation a person can have for an artistic masterpiece.

Mr. Proteau’s clinical hatred of beautiful women tells us more about himself then it does about the NHL or the fans that enjoy the Ice Girls. In fact, the Red Wings need to replace their current Ice Crew with Ice Girls, it is embarrassing watching them skate around 20 times a game.

There was a commenter to Mr. Proteau’s wasteland of meaningless noise that I believe summed it up best:

From Jack:

This is a stupid article written by a stupid person. I wish the Red Wings would get some Hot Ice Girls instead of the queers they have “sweeping” the ice.

There is no end to depths of hell the PC crowd want to devolve western humanity into. GOD forbid men appreciate beautiful women. How lewd.

Well said Jack.

Tool of the Day…

goes to Adam Proteau of the Hockey News.  I usually don’t like to share stupid posts, but this one takes the cake.

What sane person would rather look at this:

I’m So Excited…

I feel like I did when I was a little kid and my Dad came home with Tigers or Red Wings tickets. Tonight, the baseball playoffs begin and Thursday the NHL season starts.

I believe I was telling Sark last night at the bar, how despite my propensity to squander money, notwithstanding the $12 Comerica Park, chicken fingers, horrification I was going to start an austerity program.  Hmmm, I’m afraid that will have to wait.

You see, I had my fantasy hockey draft last night. I was able to get Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Dylan Larkin.  I woke up this morning so excited that I got on NHL dot com just to peruse the new merchandise. I didn’t plan on purchasing anything, you understand.  Then I ran across this.

Connor McDavid | Edmonton Oilers Alternate Jersey

What was I to do?

This was unfair trade practices on the part of the NHL and the Edmonton Oilers.  Orange in my favorite color. Royal blue/purple are a close second. I’ve been awaiting the arrival of McDavid for over a year. McDavid was my first draft pick on my fantasy team.  I have tickets to the Wings – Oilers game.  Couple the aforementioned with my excitement, and well, austerity will be there tomorrow.

Why can’t baseball players act more like hockey players?

From The Hockey News: I’m not sure if I completely agree with the story but it is amusing.

In the spring of 2002, back in the day when mastodons roamed the earth and the Toronto Maple Leafs were good, Alex Mogilny sat dumbfounded at his stall in the Air Canada Centre. The Maple Leafs had just defeated the Ottawa Senators in Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs, again, to advance to the Eastern Conference final.

As bedlam surrounded him, Mogilny wondered aloud, with a genuine look of bewilderment on his face, “Why is everyone so excited? We’ve only made it halfway through the playoffs.” You had to forgive Mogilny. It was the end of his first season in Toronto and he wasn’t accustomed to people getting so excited after watching their team almost come close to just about winning something.

I couldn’t help but remember Mogilny’s astonishment as I watched this week when teams clinched their respective divisions in Major League Baseball. In what was part celebration, part endorsement for Budweiser, team after team showered each other with champagne and beer to celebrate the fact they’d accomplished the NHL equivalent of winning one round of the playoffs.

And that’s exactly what they did. By winning their divisions, teams guaranteed themselves a spot in the top eight of 30 teams. By clinching a wildcard berth, two teams guaranteed themselves a one-game playoff to win the right to join that group. That’s all. But there they were, dousing each other in booze and whooping it up as though they’d just won a championship, which they did not. Hockey players around the world must be laughing at these guys.

Let’s contrast those celebrations with hockey. In the NHL, you win one round of the playoffs and it means you’ve survived to play another day and allow your playoff beard at least another couple of weeks of growth. That’s about it. Players shake hands with their opponents, go to the treatment room to address all manners of injuries, then prepare for Round 2. “Great win, but we still have a lot of work to do,” they usually say. They win the second round and they’re probably a little happier, but you almost never get the sense that they feel they’ve accomplished anything of note. On to Round 3.

Honor Babcock?

I share this story reluctantly.  I’m not a fan of Keith Gave’s but I agree with his suggestion.  Apparently, the Red Wings are, or were, considering some type of honor ceremony for Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock. Babcock and his Leafs open the 2015-16 NHL season at Joe Louis Arena on October 9th?

Gave says, “Don’t”, and I agree. Enough is enough.  Babcock coached the Red Wings and got paid handsomely to do it.  The Red Wings wanted to keep him. He wanted to move on.  I was offended by the dog and pony show that went on last season.  It was clear to me that when the sides hadn’t reached an agreement by the beginning of the season, Babcock was moving on.

Last time I counted, Babcock won, one, Stanley Cup in his 10 seasons with the Red Wings. That hardly justifies an honor ceremony for a guy who left town and joined arguably, the most hated rival.

I say, good riddance. Let’s honor new head coach Jeff Blashill, by welcoming in a new and hopefully more successful era with a guy that wants to be here.
