That is JV’s ERA after the Royals beat him into a conniption tonight at Comerica Park.

Verlander pitched six innings, gave up seven earned runs, on 12 HITS. He struck out only two and walked two.

At this point, JV, is horrible!

Not to be outdone, Evan Reed, allowed four runs in zero innings. In Reed’s defense though, only one run was earned. He was the victim of two errors although one was his own.

Oh yea, the Tigers defense, blows too. I think Suarez is averaging an error a game. WTF?

Even though they scored eight runs, six came in the ninth, after the game was decided.

Miggy was hitless and grounded into another double play.

Don’t look now but the Royals are a half game out and will probably be in first when they leave Detroit.

The ship is taking on water and is starting to sink. And stink.

Tigers, JV lose first game of 2014 3-1 to Orioles

Justin Verlander deserved a better fate.  He suffered his, and the Tigers, first loss of the season, but he pitched very well.

The Good:

  • JV looked like the Cy Young and end of 2014 JV.  He pitched eight innings, allowed five hits, and two earned runs.

The Bad:

  • The Tigers only managed one run, however after scoring 17 runs in the first two games, I can’t complain too much.
  • JV only struck on three while walking two but saying this is bad is a little bit of a stretch
  • Torii Hunter hit his third home run in as many games accounting for the only Tigers run.

The Ugly:

  • The Amazing Al surrendered another run and currently has 6.00 ERA.

All things considered, it was a good home stand, and even I, didn’t expect the Tigers to go 162-0. 🙂

Off to Los Angeles for a meeting with the Dodgers.

The story states that JV told Torii he was going to hit a home run and ends with this:

For nearly four games, the A’s outmaneuvered the Tigers, making them appear one-dimensional and archaic. Then the ex-Cy Young winner got in Hunter’s ear and inspired him to be a hero.

Now the question is: Can Hunter can return the favor?

My answer is no.  The only one that can return JV to his previous form is Emily Yuen.  He needs to beg, borrow, and steal, to get her back.  He hasn’t been the same since he went “Hollywood” and left his long time girlfriend.  My question is, can he get her back?  Only Emily can answer that.

Also, I don’t think enough was made about Luke Putkonen’s performance yesterday.  If you just look at the box score his line seems innocuous.  But viewed through the prism of what has been happening, Putkonen’s effort is huge.  Luke did what staff Aces do, stop the bleeding.

A Theory About J.V.

Justin Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball but struggled mightily the past month.  Even his good starts in May, pitching 7 innings and giving up 3 earned runs, are not good by JV standards.  Three ERs in  7 innings is a 3.857 ERA.

I don’t claim to be in the know.  In fact, I don’t know much.  But I heard a rumor that his ex-girlfriend Emily Yuen got married.  Now I know J.V. has been dating Kate Upton.  However, from a little research, I found out that Justin and Emily began dating in High School, continued dating through college, and during his pro career.  I will conjecture that Emily was Justin’s first love.  If in fact, Emily is married or engaged to someone else, I don’t care who J.V. is dating or how much money he’s making, I would lay odds that his head is in a bad place.

In fact, I would bet that J.V. is re-evaluating a lot of things in his life.  If the rumor about Emily getting married is true, and my conjecture is accurate, this could take a long time for J.V. to get over and could make for a tough season on the mound.

But what do I know?
