Thoughts on Miggy

Miggy has had two good games in Chicago and while I’m not saying, ‘he’s back’, his production has been nice to see.  That being said, I have noticed a few differences in his normal demeanor.  First, when he hit his home run yesterday, he put his head down and ran around the bases, foregoing his usual stutter-step before third base.  Second, I haven’t seen him constantly clowning around with everyone at first base whether on offense or defense.

While the commentators play off his incessant clowning as ‘a love for playing the game, IMHO, he takes it to the extreme and this extreme clowning projects a lack of seriousness.  Perhaps his lack of seriousness is understandable considering the amount of success he’s had and his success came immediately.  The Marlins brought him up at 19, he hit the ground running, and never looked back.  Maybe his recent struggles have humbled him a bit and forced him to refocus and take this craft a bit more seriously.  Like I said, I’m not sure he’s back, but the last few games have been fun to watch him again.

On another note, I wasn’t a big fan of Jack Morris’ color commentary with Mario Impemba but I like him a lot with Dan Dickerson. They seem to have good chemistry.  I don’t like Gibson period.  The booth rotation has to get Rod on more and get rid of Gibson for good. He’s horrible.

James McCann | Fires a Bazooka

From his knees on Sunday, 8/23/2015, to cut down a base runner.

Listen to Rod Allen say “he needs a license to carry that gun”.

I love Rod.  I wish he they would just leave him as the color guy for all of the games.  Nothing agains Jack Morris, he is my all-time favorite pitcher/Tigers player, but Rod is the best.  He makes this crappy baseball bearable to watch.  I often said he was the best thing about the 2003 season. So if anyone from the Tigers or Fox is reading, leave Rod alone and let him do the games.

And do something about the $12 chicken fingers.

Tigers 3 Royals 2

The Tiger survived terrible fielding by Ian Kinsler and Eugenio Suarez, and terrible relief from Joba and the turd, and squeezed out a narrow victory in KC.

The win increased the Tigers lead to 2.5 games in the AL Central.

A few things to note:

  1. I think this is the first time I’ve seen a starting pitcher, who wasn’t injured, ask to come out of a game. Is Scherzer just playing for his contract as it has been suggested on this site? It appears so,. For as horrible as JV has been I have never seen him ask to come out of a game. In fact, JV reminds me of Jack Morris, who had a conniption anytime he was removed.
  2. I’m starting to like Tyler Collins.
  3. I’m beginning to question the value of replay. Baseball headquarters said that the play where Perez didn’t tag up was not reviewable. Really? Why?
  4. Romine has to be the regular shortstop. Neither he nor Suarez is much of a hitter, but Suarez looks like an asshat in the field.

Joba and Nathan were not good. That’s why the Tigers need the starters to go as deep into games as humanly possible. Any started that would willingly give way to this bullpen deserves his fate.

How long is this team going to sick with Nathan? Does he have cost the Tigers a Pennant or World Series for BA and DD to admit they made a mistake?

WTF?

Words of Wisdom from Jack Morris…

Thanks for the solid Nebraska!

Verlander, who turned 30 in February, said he recently discovered that his shoulder angle has been different this year compared to video from 2011.

“The reality is the older you get, the harder you have to work, and it’s hard to do it,” Morris said. “You’ve had success. It came relatively easy at times. I know it has for him, at times.

“Every day from here on out he’s going to have less and less stuff. That’s life. That’s called the circle of life. He’s not going to get stronger. He’s not going to throw 110 (miles per hour) next year. He’s going to have to get by and learn more and be smarter with less stuff than he did when he was younger. That’s the way life is.
